The Royal Philharmonic Society has commissioned new works to composers since 1813, and among the pieces commissioned are Beethoven's ''Symphony No. 9'', Felix Mendelssohn's ''Symphony No.4'' and Antonín Dvořák's ''Symphony No.8''.〔
